What is WordPress

WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS) that allows website owners, editors, and authors to manage their websites and publish content without any programming knowledge. Today, it is the most popular CMS in the world and is used by more than 30% of all websites.

About BigBlueButton

BigBlueButton is an open source web conferencing system for online learning. The goal of the project is to enable instructors to live online classes and to conduct group collaboration meetings with remote students.
BigBlueButton supports real-time sharing of slides (including whiteboard), audio, video, chat, emojis, breakout rooms, and screen. It also allows to record all content.
BigBlueButtonBN Moodle plugin was created in addition to BigBlueButton core for fully leveraging BigBlueButton’s capabilities for Moodle users.
The BigBlueButtonBN plugin allows to:
• Create multiple activity links to online sessions within any course
• Restrict students from joining a session until a teacher (moderator) joins the session
• Launch BigBlueButton in a separate window
• Create a custom welcome message that appears at the top of the chat window when joining the session
• Specify open/close dates for the session that appears in the Moodle’s calendar
• Record a session
• Access and manage recordings

BigBlueButton integration with WordPress

Below you can find step by step guide of integrating BigBlueButton with WordPress.

Installing the plugin

1. Log in to the admin panel of WordPress and go to “Plugins” -> “Add new”

2. Enter “bigbluebutton” in the search field. You should see the BigBlueButton plugin. Click “Install Now”.

3. Wait until the message “Successfully installed the plugin” appears and click “Activate Plugin” button. The page with all installed plugins will open and you should see the BigBlueButton in the list.

Setup the BBB plugin

1. Click on the “Appearance” button and select “Widgets” from the menu. Wait until the “Widgets” page opens.

2. Hold and drag “BigBlueButton” widget to “Sidebar”

3. Go to your website and make sure that the widget is displayed.

4. Go back to the admin panel, click “Settings”, and then choose “BigBlueButton” from the menu.

5. Enter the address of your BigBlueButton server in the “BigBlueButton URL” field, be sure to add “/bigbluebutton/” at the end of the server address. Then enter the secret code of your server in the “BigBlueButton shared secret” field. Click on the “Save Settings” button.

Using the plugin

1. On the same page, scroll down to “Create a Meeting Room” and “List of Meeting Rooms”. Fill in all the fields of the “Create a Meeting Room” form and click on “Create” button.

2. The created room should be reflected in the “List of Meeting Rooms” table. Click on the “Join” button. BigBlueButton server page with the created conference should open.

3. Open your WordPress website and in the widget choose the created webinar from the dropdown list. After entering the name and password specified when creating the conference, click on the “Join” button. You should now be redirected to the conference room.
